Becky Marine (SPED) Shanna McMullin (SCORE)

Becky Marine came in today and talked a little about students with special needs and the abilities they have. They are great kids and it is a merical to have the opportunity to work with them. Students with Special Needs are People! Worst word is the "R-Word" They are students with disabilities and should not be labeled by their disabilities. Children use wheelchairs and are NOT wheelchair bound. At Parent Teacher Conferences dress down, don't try to be better than anyone, make them comfortable to be around you. Accommodations, help the students with special needs do the same work as the rest of the students. Modifications, help your students do similar work as the rest of the students.
Shanna McMullin also came today and talked and talked about the students she worked with. It was very moving. It made me want to go out and work with students. I want to help students that are at risk and she talked about how she talks and works with them. I feel like you need to be a certain kind of person to work with these kids. You can not cry when they tell you about the awful things that happen to them, you need to be there rock! Some of the stories she told were hard to hear. If you ever do have difficulties then you can contact the counselor or the at risk teacher. Not all schools have this program and it is important to help get this type of at risk program in your schools.
