Becky Marine (SPED) Shanna McMullin (SCORE)

Becky Marine came in today and talked a little about students with special needs and the abilities they have. They are great kids and it is a merical to have the opportunity to work with them. Students with Special Needs are People! Worst word is the "R-Word" They are students with disabilities and should not be labeled by their disabilities. Children use wheelchairs and are NOT wheelchair bound. At Parent Teacher Conferences dress down, don't try to be better than anyone, make them comfortable to be around you. Accommodations, help the students with special needs do the same work as the rest of the students. Modifications, help your students do similar work as the rest of the students.
Shanna McMullin also came today and talked and talked about the students she worked with. It was very moving. It made me want to go out and work with students. I want to help students that are at risk and she talked about how she talks and works with them. I feel like you need to be a certain kind of person to work with these kids. You can not cry when they tell you about the awful things that happen to them, you need to be there rock! Some of the stories she told were hard to hear. If you ever do have difficulties then you can contact the counselor or the at risk teacher. Not all schools have this program and it is important to help get this type of at risk program in your schools.

(Notes from class are below)

Allow students to work on their own and express themselves through their work.

Write goals and procedures on the board EVERY day!

Be patient and wait for students to ask questions and reply. Must wait MORE than 10 seconds! They need time to think and process there thoughts.

Take pictures of steps of art project so they have a visual reference.

Do NOT rearrange room.

Mondovi #2

Today I was able to go to the Mondovi Elementary school in the morning to watch them create baskets.  It amazes me the projects they are able to create in such a short amount of time. I asked Ms. Kees about how to talk to students using the PBIS techniques they have implemented in their school.  For instance there was a girl that was not sitting in her seat so I asked her to please go back to your seat and work on your art and she ignored me, so I asked again to go sit down, she said she was writing names down so I backed off a little. Later I found out you should use the PBIS tactics by remind them of the rules, then ask them what they should be doing, and finally tell them what to do. If they do what they are suppose to then you should thank them for doing the right actions.

Mondovi #1

Today was my first day at the Mondovi Elementary school. They had a 2 hour delay and my teacher had Prep until noon, so I got there at noon and stayed until 3:30. The teacher Ms.Kees was very helpful and talked me through her complicated schedule! She gets her students in a 6 day rotation. She sees her k-3rd graders 3 times a week and the 4th and 5th graders only once every 6 days I believe. They use the PBIS trend and they have adapted to a certain set of rules to help their students succeed in school.

Diverse Learners

How do you differentiate instruction for diverse learners?

Always changing my instruction and to make sure each student is understanding. I am really interested in the multiple intelligence's and I think it is important to incorporate all types of learning into each lesson. By taking a look at what each type of learner is interested in and figuring out how they learn then altering your lesson to incorporate things that will help them learn the objectives you are teaching. For visual learners using examples and showing them how to do the project, show things step by step, talk to the students for auditory learners, give written had outs, and kinesthetic have them do it and learn by trail and error.  Also with any students that make have disabilities or special needs I can alter the lesson for those individuals based on their IEP's and how well I know each student and their capabilities. I can modify the project for their abilities by either giving them more time, change what is being assess or graded, and/or making the process easier for them.

Assess Student Artwork

Interview Question:

How do you Assess Student Artwork?

I feel that it is important to observe the progress of the students work as well as matching work with lesson objectives. Focusing on the elements and principals of design as well as their academic language. I will have them turn in a art portfolio at the end of the semester so I can look for improvement in the work and craftsmanship of the work. Project shows evidence of learning. Observation is a very important way I can assess students work to make sure people are understanding and when they are ready to move on to the next step. Have a rubric or assessment form for students to abide by and inform them on what and how they will be graded on.

Ms. Jennifer Sweeney

Ms. Sweeney stressed the importance of reading. She said to Read, Read, Read. It is important to read and gain more knowledge about different art subjects and also to ask questions. She was talking about SAGE= Student Achievement... I didn't catch the rest but it stressed student achievement which is similar to edTPA because it focuses on the students. She works with 18 students at a time which is a lot but it could be worse. It is a great idea to talk to parents, and talk to them right away and keep them informed, this can also help promote the art program if you get the parents involved. She does not have a lot of rules, only take care of the person and the problem and don't have class stars or broadcast or punish students in front of the whole class. Use document camera instead of having students gather around the table for a demonstration. She said this is one of the best things to have in the art classroom.  They use the PBIS= Discipline system. Punting Practice, preparing what to do when things go wrong. How do you react on the spot?  SHe has 1 class every 6 days. Collaborate with other teachers to combine or make lessons that relate to your projects. I really liked learning about her assessments and conferences.
SHe had the best ideas for clean-up, things like find 20 scraps off the floor and to ELMO's Song I make Art.  Something to try is Animoto-video sharing very easy to use www.animoto.com, Pintrest, the use of the Document Camera, Wordle-word collage at its best at www.wordle.net, and Children Books. PDP= Goals, you need it to get a new linens, Need to pay for it, you need administrators to sign it. Every 5 years you need it. SHe says you are always getting evaluated which is good so you can always be improving. A teacher evaluation or principal comes and sits

edTPA

On-Going Reflection
How has your participation thus far in the edTPA impacted your knowledge and skills in the following areas:

Planning- I feel that edTPA has not helped in the planning processes as much as it has in the other areas. I do however plan on how I will work with my students more but I do not think about the materials and process steps. It was my main focus on my previous lesson but now it is more about objectives and assessment to help students learn.

Instruction- It has really helped me break down my lesson into small steps and focus on details that I may not have previously considered

Assessment- This is important so that you can make sure your students are learning. edTPA is all about students and in order to make sure they are getting everything they need assessments are necessary!

What questions do you have at this point?

Is there any way to make this simpler? Some of it seems a bit repetitive, and things get lost in the details.I just need to get more understanding, it feels repetitive and it confuses me so I feel unorganized and can not figure out where to start.

Safety

Possible Interview Question:

How do you deal with safety in the classroom?

I feel that safety is very important and it also can teach students to be responsible for their own safety and the safety of others. It is important to inform students of all the possible situations that may happen and why we have rules for them such as no running,  no throwing allowed under any circumstance, keep chairs pushed in and water off the floor, hands to yourself, no using any materials without asking permission first, and so on. With each rule I will give an example of what happens if you don't obey the rules.   For any safety rule that is broken I will give out immediate detentions. If it is a safety issue that relates to a type of material we will be using such as scissors or a scrapper for printmaking I will warn them ahead of time what to look out for and then if they do not follow instructions I will take the tool away. I will keep clear pathways in the classroom incase of emergencies and have the exit clearly labeled with tornado and fire plans by the exit, and inform them of where we keep hazardous materials and label all materials and cupboards, drawers, and cabinets.
