Pictures of class and ART TEACHING BLOG for PRACTICUM EXPERIENCE

How to Teach Culture:
Plays art history game that is like a scavenger hunt. Its like she is quizzing them but it is a fun ungraded game.
·       With each lesson she introduces an artist or styles/movement or a culture or a time period, or a book or a cross curricular  activity she has the science curriculum.

Prepare for principal observation:
·       She doesn’t do anything different but she would like him to come at the beginning of a lesson.
·       He only comes for a short period of time.

Assess Art:
·       Through questioning before and after class
·       Looking at project and product and she is looking for understanding
·       Through quizzes and quizzing
·       Informal assessments because students do not have letter.  it is based off of behavior and effort.
·       Has objectives that are simple written on the board
·       Have an objective for clean up. Teaches behavior.
·       Showing that they are profichant in everyday things.

______HOW DO THE STUDENTS ACT UPON ENTERING THE CLASS? HOW DOES THE TEACHER ACT?
She said good morning boys and girls have a seat. She usually stands by the door or near it when they arrive and make
sure that the noise level stays down. They are supposed to enter with voice level zero.

______HOW DOES THE TEACHER GET THEIR ATTENTION TO BEGIN CLASS? IS THERE A PROCEDURE FOR LISTENING?
The whole school uses the clap system created from PBIS to start the class time.

______WHAT IS THE CURRENT PROJECT? (ask the teacher for a copy of the lesson if he/she has one). WHAT ARE THE OBJECTIVES? WHAT MATERIALS ARE BEING USED? )
She does not use lesson plans. Her objectives for the lesson she did today (4-3-13) were to draw at least 2 fish and 3 patterns in the background and have it on a table. Then they use pencil and then trace it in marker. Later they will paint it.
She uses project samples as her lesson plans and sometimes writes comments on the back.

______COMMENT ON THE TEACHER’S INSTRUCTION (HOW HE/SHE BEGINS CLASS, DEMONSTRATIONS OF TECHNIQUES, INCORPORATION OF TECHNOLOGY, SENSE OF HUMOR).
She sometimes uses her Mimio and document camera to start lesson. Then she has them come up to the board to move things around on the screen.

______HOW DO YOU SEE CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT BEING HANDLED? ARE ANY STUDENTS BEING OFF TASK OR DISRESPECTFUL- HOW DOES THE TEACHER HANDLE THIS? IS THERE A SYSTEM OF DISCIPLINE THAT THE SCHOOL USES?
The school uses the PBIS system. Rules are posted on her walls and in hallways and other classrooms. She has them sit in their seats unless told otherwise. Students raise hands if they want to talk. Names should be written on each project.

______ARE THERE RULES POSTED? WHAT ARE THEY?
Yes the rules are posted and they follow the school rules for PBIS.  She came up with her rules. Each teacher has their own matrix but they are all based around be respectful, be responsible, and be safe.

______HOW DOES THE TEACHER ADDRESS SAFETY ISSUES?
Safety is covered in their PBIS Matrix. She gave me a copy to have to look over. She makes them sit on their “Bottoms” so people can see and so no one tips over.

______HOW DOES THE TEACHER HANDLE: BATHROOM BREAKS/LOCKER/DRINKS? RADIO/IPODS? TELEPHONE? USE OF MATERIALS? BORROWING MATERIALS OVERNIGHT? CLEANING UP?
No electronics used. She lets students go to the bathroom whenever they ask, they do not take materials overnight, and cleanup takes 5 minutes, everyone is to clean up their own space.

______DOES THE TEACHER USE A LESSON PLAN, CURRICULUM MAP, OR A CALENDAR TO PLAN UNITS? DOES HE/SHE HAVE A WRITTEN CURRICULUM? (can you see it?) WHAT DOES THE PLAN INCLUDE?
She doesn’t have units she just does individual projects. She has 4 large bins by her desk with different projects/samples in them with notes on the back that give a reminder on how to teach the lesson and the grade level. She digs threw her  school events but not for her lessons. bin and picks out a project that she thinks needs to be done. She has a calendar to show when her meetings are or other.

(The pictures below are picture of the class and are examples of things I have talked about in my blog.)

Mondovi #7 4/19/13

April 19th 2013

I finished my lesson with the first group of students I had. It was difficult to work with them because I wanted to start the project over. When I thought this lesson the first time we I thought we could finish the whole lesson in 30min including clean up and I was wrong. So today some of them were behind and I found better string for them to work with so they removed the brown thick string they had with a thinner black strand of hemp.  Many of their beads were breaking so if I were to do this again I would use clay and make more time to discuss and assess their work by having them write on paper or a worksheet about what texture and design are. I did really well with my PBIS today. I asked several students “Do you think that was the best why to do that? How/what could you do differently?” I was excited and try to challenge myself to implement PBIS to at least 3 students per class period.
We hung up 2 different displays today and talked about how to hang them and what to do with the ones that won’t fit on the boards. We tried to get as many up as we could but we tell the students we hung them all so that when they look for theirs they just think they can’t find it. This way their feelings don’t get hurt if they think we didn’t choose them. Also we put a few on top that were exceptional but after that they were in a random order so anyone’s art could get in.
Today is my last day here at the Mondovi Elementary School. I will have completed 29 ½ hours here and I recognize the students but was not remembering many of their names. The next experience I have I would really like to improve in this area. I have NEVER been good at remembering names and my CT gets about 225 different students. When I do speak to the students I always say thing that I remembered about them even though I had forgotten their names. I would say things like “I really liked the alien you drew last week you are so creative maybe you could show me what else you like to draw.” This way they know I am paying attention to them and remember something about each of them and they don’t even notice I didn’t say their name. Unfortunately when my 5th graders came in I did not use the PBIS system as much. I did it 3 times but the class was misbehaving so much I had to resort to other methods to try to maintain the class.

Mondovi #6 4/17/13

April 17th 2013

Today I taught the second half of my lesson for the fist time. It went really well and the students behaved perfectly!  The first day we did this project it was so chaotic that it was hard to keep the classes attention because all they wanted to do was work with the Model Magic.  They acted more independently this class period and did not come to me for as many questions. I was only there for a couple of morning classes and did not get to work with my other third graders that day. I hope the next one goes as well as this one did. My CT likes my lesson and is going to use it in her class next year. It is a fun and easy lesson that introduces them to texture and design. Although I still need more practice I want to continue to use this lesson in the future. They other classes worked in their sketchbook and drew aliens. It was so fun to walk around and see what different things each student came up with. Their imaginations at this level just amaze me. This is why we cannot allow art to be taken out of school. Without encouraging this type of creativity it can often be lost, instead we need to be constantly encouraging this type of creativity so that their minds are able to think outside of the box and create something no one has ever seen before!

Why my CT became a teacher
She loves kids and she loves art so it sounded like the perfect plan/mixer and became a teacher. She didn’t even think about when she was in high school, but by her early 20’s she wanted to do something more meaningful than working at the mall. She didn’t know weather she wanted to be an elementary teacher or an art teacher but she had a natural ability in art so she felt that was the better direction to go in.
